Dr. Xuelai Wu

Director of Music

Xuelai Wu joined Shepherd of the Hills UCC as the Director of Music in 2014. She enjoys working with Shepherd of the Hills Choir and explores various music styles with them. A native of China, Wu enjoys a multi-faceted career as collaborative pianist, chamber musician, vocal coach, choral pianist, and church musician. Besides Shepherd of the Hills, currently she serves as the teaching artist for Arizona Opera where she plays for the opera outreach tour, covering central and northern Arizona, the principal accompanist for the Grammy Award-Winning Phoenix Boys Choir with whom she tours locally and internationally, and staff pianist for woodwind department at Glendale Community College. Prior to these appointments she has served as staff pianist and vocal coach at the Chandler-Gilbert Community College and Beijing Central Conservatory of Music.

Her passion for both instrumental and vocal collaboration has led her to be the collaborative pianist for many festivals, conferences, and competitions in United States and China, including Interlochen Arts Camp, Tuba and Euphonium International Conference, MTNA competition, Franco American Vocal Academy, China Double Bass Competition, and China National Voice and Opera Competition, among others. Most recently she appeared with world renown tenor Augusto Paglialunga in a collaboration of Schubert’s Winterreise.

A strong advocate for community outreach, she has given many recitals and concerts to audiences with limited access to traditional performance venues, such as voluntary organizations, juvenile centers, hospitals, and retirement homes.

Xuelai holds a Doctoral of Musical Arts degree in collaborative piano from Arizona State University; a Master’s degree in collaborative piano from Cleveland Institute of Music (CIM); a Master's degree in vocal accompanying from Beijing Central Conservatory of Music, China, and a Bachelor's degree in Music from Guangzhou South China Normal University, China.
